Switch to digital TV

From October, 14, analog television broadcasting will be turned off in Tatarstan.

On October 14, 2019, a full-scale transition to digital TV broadcasting will take place in the Republic of Tatarstan, within which analog broadcasting will be canceled.

You can find out which TV broadcast is active now in the following way: the letter “A” on TV screens next to logos of the Channel One, Russia 1, NTV, Channel 5 means that analog television is broadcast.

The digital TV doesn’t require any additional equipment. The analog TV requires purchasing a digital console. In a need to watch different channels on different TVs, it is necessary to purchase a console for each television receiver.

DVB-T2 has been adopted as the main format of digital terrestrial TV in Russia. You can check the information whether the DVB-T2 tuner is built into the TV set in the instructions for the TV. If the TV does not support the standard DVB-T2, you will need a console and connect it with the antenna.

It is possible to verify whether the TV supports the digital standard DVB-T2 in two ways:

– By the DVB-T2 inscription in the TV passport. If the DVB-T standard is indicated, then the TV does not support the required format for receiving digital broadcasting, and it needs an adapter.

– By brand name and model characteristics on the Internet. On the page that appears, you need to click on the “all features” button, find the item “signal reception”. DVB-T / T2 MPEG4should be written in front of the item if your TV supports the digital broadcasting standard.

  • How to choose a console?
    • When choosing a console, you need to pay attention to the DVB-T2 logo, which is displayed on all devices accepting the right signal format.

RCA and HDMI outputs for connecting to a TV are standard for consoles. For some TVs, only the SCART output is suitable (you may need an adapter). Pay attention to the presence of a USB output for connecting a USB flash drive or hard drive.

When choosing a DVB-T2 console, search for equipment reviews and user reviews online.

Pay attention to whether there is a manufacturer’s website for the chosen model. This can help with software upgrades or console repairs.

Now there are more than 370 models of consoles for receiving digital terrestrial television available on the market.

If there is no connection to the collective antenna, then you also need to purchase an individual one, which can be indoor or outdoor. Near the television tower, you can use an indoor antenna. At a distance from the transmitting telecentre, you use an outdoor antenna with an amplifier, placing it at the highest possible height. It is necessary to take into account the following when choosing a receiving antenna: how far it is from the TV tower, what is the transmitter power, building density and landscape, the floor where the TV is located and where the windows go, what is the level of industrial and domestic interference. The closer the receiving antenna is to the transmitting station, the better the reception.

  • Types of antennas
    • – By installation place

Indoor antennas are installed inside the premises. Reception to the indoor antenna is possible only where the level of the TV signal is high enough. There are not too many such zones. There are not very many chances to get a quality “image” in settlements, country houses and other places far from the tower with the help of a room antenna.

Outdoor antennas can be used in most places, including country houses and dachas. They are suitable for terrain with dense buildings and complex landscapes. They are usually located on the roofs, walls, balconies of buildings. Installing an outdoor antenna requires substantial effort and some experience, but it provides better reception quality!

Collective antennas are located on the roof of the house and provide the whole house with a TV signal. Used in apartment buildings.

      – By the type of signal amplification

Passive antennas receive and amplify the signal due to their design. They do not connect to the electrical network and do not have active amplification elements. Thus, a passive antenna does not make its own noise in the received signal. Suitable for receiving a TV signal at a short distance from the tower.

Passive compact room antennas are used to receive a signal at a short distance from the transmitting tower. Suitable in low-rise buildings at an altitude of more than 10 meters.

High passive antennas are suitable for receiving digital terrestrial television in rural areas with a significant distance from the tower.

Active antennas amplify the received signal not only due to the design features, but also with the help of an electronic amplifier. The amplifier can be mounted inside the housing of the antenna or separately from it. Power is supplied from a household electrical outlet using an adapter.

      – By the received frequencies

All-wave antennas are able to simultaneously receive signals from both ranges. Most often, TV viewers such antennas exactly, because various TV channels in Russia are broadcasted in both ranges.

Decimal antennas are suitable for receiving only digital terrestrial television.

Meter antennas are suitable for receiving only analog TV channels.

      – Antenna specifications

The technical characteristic, which is worth paying attention to the consumer is the antenna amplifying. They are measured in decibels (dB). The higher the value, the better the antenna's ability to amplify the TV signal.

The assembly is usually described in detail in the passport of the product or on the packaging. Read the instructions carefully before starting the assembly. Pay attention to the recommended installation location of the antenna and how to connect it to the TV to achieve the best reception quality.

  • Antenna choosing tips
    • Examples of some typical situations that will help you when choosing an antenna. However, there are always different conditions of admission in different places, which depend on many factors.

      3–10 km from the tower

Apartment on the top floor of a high-rise building at a short distance from the TV tower. Use an antenna without an amplifier. If the tower is visible from the window, the signal can be taken even to the indoor antenna. If the tower is not visible from the window, install an outdoor antenna on the roof and point towards the tower or use a directional indoor antenna.

      10–30 km from the tower

Install an outdoor antenna on the roof. If you live on the upper floors of a high building and the windows are facing the tower, it will be enough to install an antenna outside the window.

      30–50 km from the tower

You need an outdoor antenna with an amplifier. Direct it towards the nearest tower.

You can purchase receiving equipment for digital television in house appliances, electronics, and radio equipment markets, and also in post offices.

  • Connection methods

    • How to connect and configure digital TV for free on a TV with a built-in DVB-T2 tuner

Step 1. Turn off the power to the TV.

Step 2. Connect the antenna cable to the antenna input of the digital TV.

Step 3. Turn on the power and the TV.

Step 4. Go to the appropriate section of the TV settings menu and activate the digital tuner.

Step 5. Perform an automatic program search using the instruction manual. You can perform a manual channel search. In this case, you must enter the channel number or frequency.

How to connect the digital TV with a digital console

Step 1. Turn off the power to the TV.

Step 2. Connect the antenna cable to the antenna input of the digital console. Connect the video and audio cable to the corresponding outputs on the TV and digital console. The image quality will be higher when the console is connected to the TV with an HDMI cable.

Step 3. Turn on the power and the TV.

Step 4. Select the input source in the menu: HDMI, AV, SCART, etc.

Step 5. Perform an automatic program search using the instruction manual. You can perform a manual search. In this case, you must enter the channel number or frequency.

How to connect both digital and analog television on a DVB-T2 standard console

To set the viewing of television channels of the analog format, you need an additional antenna cable having corresponding RC-outputs, connect the output (RF OUT) of the digital receiver with the output (ANT IN) of the television receiver.

After connecting the television equipment, it is necessary to set the TV reception mode in the analog format (TV) using the remote control of the television. Then, search for the analog television format channels. Tuning and viewing of channels are carried out from the remote of a digital receiver in AV mode.

Digital terrestrial TV broadcasting in the territory of the RF is conducted in test mode. Therefore, there may be breaks in the on-air broadcasting of digital TV channels.
