Kazan has hosted the major world sporting events. In 2013, the capital of Tatarstan hosted the XXVII world summer Universiade, in 2015 Kazan hosted the world aquatics championships. Two years later, in 2017, the city hosted the FIFA Confederations Cup, and in 2018 the FIFA World Cup. These events were highly appreciated by the international experts, and the Universiade became a powerful momentum for the development of the city's sports infrastructure and the promotion of sports.
Today in Kazan there are more than 2 thousand sports facilities-football pitches, volleyball and tennis courts, swimming pools, sports complexes. As of January 1, 2020, more than 569 thousand people, or 49,54% of the total number of citizens, regularly work out and play sports in Kazan.
Every year thousands of citizens, professionals and amateurs are involved in sporting and mass participating events the most popular are the Russian ski race, the all-Russian day of running “Cross- country race of Nations”, tournaments “Golden puck” and “Leather ball”, all-Russian competitions in street basketball “Orange ball”, Kazan athletics marathon, Kazan half marathon, traditional track -and -field race in May, Kazan ski marathon and others.
In addition, the capital of Tatarstan is implementing the project of the all-Russian sports activity “Fit for labor and defense”, which contributes to the increase in the number of fit people.
In Kazan, there are 29 municipal kids and youth sports schools for more than 17 thousand athletes in 43 sports. Training sessions of all youth schools are held at the comprehensive sports facilities of the city.
