Sigil of Kazan
The modern sigil of Kazan was adopted in 2004. It represents an image on a quadrangular heraldic shield with rounded lower corners, pointed at the tip.
The sigil depicts the dragon Zilant, a mythical creature from Tatar legends. Zilant is present on the sigil of the city from time immemorial, since the XVI century (according to other data – the XVII century), as soon as Kazan became a Russian city.
The heraldic description of the image reads: “In a silver field on the green land, there is a black dragon with scarlet wings and tongue, with golden paws, claws and eyes, topped with a golden crown. The shield is crowned with a Kazan hat”.
The dragon represents a creative power, conducive to man. It possesses cosmic supernatural power, symbolizes strength, greatness, life, light, wisdom, invincibility, immortality, and eternal rebirth. An arrow-shaped tongue means impulse, speed, and focus. Earth is the keeper of life and wealth, a symbol of life. The crown is a symbol of achieving a high stage of development. Kazan hat indicates the status of Kazan as the capital of the territories and their ancient traditions.
The colors of the sigil also have a symbolic meaning. The green color is a symbol of spring, joy, hope, nature; it means wealth, prosperity, and stability. Gold is a symbol of the highest value, wealth, grandeur, constancy, strength, generosity, intelligence, intuition, and sunlight. The silver color is a symbol of perfection, nobility, purity of thoughts, and peace. The scarlet color is a symbol of courage, fearlessness, maturity, energy, vitality. The black color is a symbol of prudence, wisdom, honesty, humility, and eternity of being.

Official badge of the Mayor of Kazan
The decision to develop the official badge of the Mayor of Kazan as a heraldic symbol was made by the Kazan Council of People's Deputies in March 2005. In order to determine what it should look like, official badges of other cities, including European ones, were studied. Jewelers of St. Petersburg made the badge of the Mayor in August 2005.
